BOAT TRIPS ON LAKE GARDA: FERRIES, TOURS AND RENTALS FROM SAN FELICE DEL BENACO
The gentle rocking of the waves, the breeze tousling your hair, the fresh scent of the lake. Taking to the water is an experience that anyone on holiday at Lake Garda should try at least once. Arriving at your destination by boat opens up a whole new perspective, one you simply can't get through a car window.
The mountains disappear behind historic buildings as the village slowly comes into view, revealing its boutiques, narrow alleyways and artisan shops. At the harbour, the moored boats seem to hold a story in every hull: maybe that one belongs to a local fisherman who heads out at night to catch eels; or to a family who used to spend summer afternoons out on the water when the kids were small; or perhaps to someone who traded city stress for a slower pace of life. Whatever story they spark in your imagination, you can live your own version, even if just for a day.
Europa Silvella makes it easy to reach the main ports in the area in no time, thanks to its prime lakeside location between San Felice del Benaco and Manerba del Garda.
If you're ready to set sail, here's your guide.
Ferry, boat tour or rental: which one is right for you?
If you want to get out on the water, there are several options worth knowing about on Lake Garda.
Lake Garda ferries: how they work and where to board
The ferry is the most obvious choice, a proper means of transport on water. But let's be upfront: ferries aren't the most convenient option for every occasion. In the south-west part of the lake they're perfect, with fast crossings and frequent runs throughout the day. Further north, in the upper part of the lake, things get trickier, with fewer departures and crossings that can take up to three hours.
If you do decide to take a ferry, the official reference site is Navigarda. The main ports to know:
- San Felice del Benaco port: the closest to the campsite, easily reachable by bike in just a few minutes. A quiet little harbour with a bar;
- Portese port: another small port away from the town centre. There are a few bars nearby for a quick stop;
- Manerba del Garda port: from here you can also rent a boat with RappyDrive or grab a bite at the restaurant nearby (check updated hours on Google Maps);
- Salò port: right in the historic town centre. We recommend taking a stroll around while you wait for your ferry;
- Desenzano del Garda port: the furthest away, about 25 minutes by car. Like Salò, the port is in the heart of the city, so if you leave from here a visit is a must.

Boat tours and licence-free rentals
If ferries are for getting from A to B, boat tours and rentals are all about exploring the lake.
For tours, we work with ticket and tours: a platform packed with experiences across the area, available to our guests at a special discount. You'll find gastronomic, sporting and adrenaline-fuelled options, nature experiences and of course plenty of time on the water.
For example, the "Two-island boat tour departing from San Felice, Portese and Manerba" takes you on an hour-long cruise around the islands between Manerba del Garda and San Felice del Benaco, offering stunning views of the Isola dei Conigli and the Isola del Garda, including its remarkable private villa.
Or, if you prefer, this tour will take you to discover Sirmione and its many highlights. By speedboat, you'll visit the thermal springs, the Roman Villa of Catullus and the Scaligero Castle with its medieval harbour and much more. The tour also includes docking and a two-hour stop in the town to explore the streets and shops of one of Lake Garda's most loved villages.
Rental, which you can read more about in this article, is perfect if you want to explore the lake independently. You can cruise freely from north to south, soak up the sun as the waves carry you, or why not turn it into a lunch spot on board, a pretty unforgettable setting.
For this service, we work with two trusted partners:
- Rappy Drive: at Manerba port, offering motorboats available without a licence;
- Hotel San Filis: at San Felice port, providing electric boats, also without a nautical licence.
Practical tips for your Lake Garda boat trip
Whatever option you go with, here are a few useful pointers:
- Always check availability: for tours, rentals or ferries, always refer to the official websites;
- In peak season: book rentals and experiences in advance if you can, as spots fill up fast;
- Keep an eye on the weather: conditions on the lake can change quickly. If you're planning a trip out on the water, especially independently, check the forecast just before you head out;
- Don't forget to bring: sunscreen, an extra layer (there's almost always a breeze on the lake) and plenty of water. Staying hydrated in summer is essential;
- Pop by reception: for any questions or help planning your excursions, we're always happy to assist.
Conclusion
If you're on holiday by the lake, getting out on the water is practically non-negotiable. Whether you're heading somewhere, exploring or just enjoying the thrill of skimming across the surface, there's no shortage of ways to do it.
Europa Silvella, right on the lakefront, is also a great base if you've come with your own boat, as guests have exclusive access to our private moorings and slipway. For more details, visit this page.
