Lake Garda beyond the best known spots

Gardaland, the most famous beaches, strolls along the lakefront: we know, these are the first things that come to mind when you think of a holiday here. But Lake Garda is also something else, and our staff know it well. We asked our team to share a few unusual experiences they've tried themselves: five came out of it, perfect for anyone looking for something beyond the classic itinerary.

Village festivals on Lake Garda: local events not to miss

Eleonora, our reception manager, starts like this: "If you really want to understand Garda, seeing it isn't enough: you have to taste the local products, dance to live folk music, listen to the dialect".
Village festivals are an institution that runs through the Garda summer, rooted in farming and religious traditions passed down for generations. Every year, on the Brescia shore and in the villages of Valtènesi, there are fixed dates that anyone visiting the lake in summer shouldn't miss:

• Valtènesi in Rosa (Moniga del Garda): Italy's leading event dedicated to rosé wines and the local Chiaretto, in the charming Castle of Moniga;
• Festa Alpina Estiva (Padenghe sul Garda): an evening where the whole village gathers around the spit roast, with live music in the background;
• I Giardini del Garda (Salò): one of the most important botanical exhibitions on the lake, perfect for anyone who loves plants and greenery;
• Notti Bianche (Desenzano del Garda): every summer Wednesday the old town comes alive with live music and shops open late;
• Notte Bianca (Salò): a late August evening when the bay lights up until late.

Zeni Museum in Bardolino: wine, tastings and a sensory journey

Andrea, also a receptionist, suggests this experience every time someone asks her what to do nearby: "It's suitable for everyone, whether you're a wine expert or just curious. The museum is free; you can taste the Zeni family wines through the free dispenser or book paid tastings if you want to go deeper".
The Zeni Museum in Bardolino has been open to the public since 1991, built from a private collection that tells the story of the winemaking process step by step. After the visit, you can freely try up to eight different wines thanks to the Wineemotion dispensers, or choose a guided tasting in the Bottaia, pairing wines with cold cuts and cheeses, or experience the Olfactory Gallery, a sensory journey dedicated to the scents of wine, the only one of its kind in Italy. There's also a children's area, so parents can enjoy the tasting at their own pace.

Mille Miglia in Brescia: historic car museum and the city centre

It was Maria, from the back office, who pointed us this way: in her view it's perfect for car lovers, but also for those who know nothing about racing and want to bring the kids to see something they won't forget.
The Mille Miglia was a car race that ran from Brescia to Rome and back between 1927 and 1957, crossing Italy from end to end. Today it's still run, but as a historic re-enactment. In Brescia, in the former monastery complex of Sant'Eufemia, the Historic Car Museum keeps the legend alive through vintage cars and settings that recreate the atmosphere of the race, from the late 1920s through to 1957.

Our tip is to pair the visit with a walk through Brescia's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, with Piazza della Loggia, the Old Cathedral and the Castle. A full day away from the lake, well worth the trip.

Beekeeping experience in San Felice del Benaco: a morning among the bees

This suggestion comes from Andrea, our manager, who feels it's deeply in tune with what we try to convey here at the camping village too: respect for nature, curiosity, and care for the ecosystem.

In San Felice del Benaco, just a few minutes from us, Stefano opens up his apiary to share the organised and surprising life of bees, with suit and protective hat provided on site. A hive is opened, you observe the hierarchy inside it, and learn how honey, wax, propolis and royal jelly are made. For children it's an experience hard to forget, but adults are just as amazed. It lasts about two and a half hours and is open to everyone from age 4 up, except those allergic to insect stings.

SUP yoga in Peschiera del Garda: sport and relaxation on the lake

The last suggestion comes from Laura, who like Eleonora and Andrea works at reception and knows well the tastes of the guests she meets every day. She recommends it to anyone looking for something more meditative, away from the crowded beach and the pace of a classic holiday. In Peschiera del Garda you can combine a SUP tour with a final SUP yoga class.
No prior experience needed: the instructor guides you through using the board step by step, and during the class you can stand, sit or lie down, with no pressure on technique. In three hours you get exercise, relaxation and a view of Peschiera from the water: not an easy combination to find elsewhere.
